Trauma Healing: When the Flashbacks Hit

The moments trauma suddenly drags you backwards again.

These poems were written from lived experience.
From the moments trauma suddenly drags you backwards again.
The panic. The memories. The feeling of reliving something your body never truly escaped.

This collection explores PTSD, flashbacks, fear, survival and the emotional aftermath trauma leaves behind.

More poems will continue to be added to this collection over time.

Sometimes the flashback starts before I even realise it.

Sometimes the flashback starts before I even realise it.

Not in my mind.
In my body.

My body always knows first.

Before the memory even fully forms, my chest tightens like invisible hands are crushing my ribs from the inside out.
My stomach drops.
My skin starts burning.
Every nerve inside me screams danger before my brain can even catch up to what is happening.

And suddenly the room does not feel safe anymore.

A smell pulls me backwards.
A voice.
A certain laugh.
The sound of heavy footsteps behind me.
A hand moving too fast.
A door shutting too hard.
The smell of sweat, alcohol, cigarettes, aftershave.

And just like that, I am gone.

Not emotionally.
Physically.

My body leaves the present while my mind gets dragged violently back into survival mode.

People think flashbacks are memories.
They are not.

Memories stay in the past.
Flashbacks drag the past directly into your nervous system until your body believes it is happening all over again.

I stop breathing properly.
My hands shake uncontrollably.
My hearing changes.
The room starts spinning while my body prepares to fight, freeze, beg or disappear all over again.

And the worst part?

Sometimes nobody around me even notices it happening.

Because trauma taught me how to panic quietly.

It taught me how to smile while my heart was exploding.
How to sit still while my body was reliving terror.
How to make suffering look normal enough that nobody asks questions.

That is what PTSD does.

It turns ordinary moments into crime scenes inside your own head.

A shopping centre.
A crowded room.
A stranger brushing against you.
A smell in the air.
A certain tone of voice.

And suddenly your body is no longer yours again.

Suddenly you are trapped inside memories you never asked to carry.

People love talking about healing like trauma becomes some beautiful story of survival.

But nobody talks about this part.

Nobody talks about the exhaustion of constantly being dragged backwards into moments that nearly destroyed you.
Nobody talks about how terrifying it is when your own body becomes a trigger.
Nobody talks about the shame that comes afterwards when the flashback finally loosens its grip and you realise you are standing there shaking over something nobody else could even see.

But I feel it.
Every single fucking time.

Embers of the Dark

Embers of the Dark
By Amanda Kill ©

With little to no warning,
the flashbacks come crawling.
The pain I hide runs deep inside,
pulling me under like the violence of the tide.

Not knowing what is real
and what lives only inside my mind,
shadows of the past whisper through the night,
blurring my vision, stealing my light.

Taking my thunder,
controlling my life,
wondering if anything
will ever truly feel alright.

You told me you would take my life.
Sometimes I still wonder if you were right,
not knowing how much longer
I can survive this fight.

The echoes of screams
still ring inside my ears,
a war within myself,
fed by trauma and fear.

But even in darkness,
embers still glow.
A quiet spark of strength
I refuse to let go.

Echoes of the Past

Echoes of the Past
By Amanda Kill ©

With little to no warning, the flashbacks crawl in,
the pain I hide is a storm within.
Pulling me under like waves in the tide,
blurring the line between truth and my mind.

Shadows of the past whisper at night,
stealing my vision, dimming my light.
Taking my thunder, controlling my life,
leaving me wondering, will I be alright?

You told me you’d take my life away,
and sometimes I wonder if I should stay.
Not knowing how much longer I can fight,
yet still clinging to hope, refusing the night.

The echoes of screams still ring in my ears,
a battle inside me, fed by my fears.
But even in darkness, embers still glow,
a spark of strength I refuse to let go.
